Bitsy's Story

R.I.P. 9/1/05

Bitsy (Itsy Bitsy) was a tiny half pound 12-week old kitten at the local shelter where I volunteer. She had CH and was in danger of dying when I took her home to foster her in October 2003. Within two months she had gained two pounds and though she had much trouble going in and out of the litter pan and staying still to eat or drink, I helped her along and cleaned her up when necessary and slowly but surely she got stronger and of course, she immediately won my heart and is still with me today. She runs around the house like a jack rabbit when she is excited and is smart and sassy and sweet, too. She gets along well with my other eleven kitties and is an integral part of the family. She plays and snuggles and enjoys life. She is my little angel, and I wouldn't have wanted anyone but me to be her furrrever meowmy.

Bitsy is the only kitty I have that likes to "tail twirl." I have toys on strings that hang down off a treadmill which is now the cats' "domain" for their beds and boxes and toys. She walks up on the treadmill and actually "catches" the string by her tail, which she keeps straight up and uses like a rudder to steer herself, and lets the string wrap itself around her tail once or twice--on purpose--and she can unwrap it as well (or I do it for her). She has also learned to climb her way up with her claws onto my couches and chairs to look out windows or take naps or my bed (where she sleeps behind my leg at night). When she is ready to come down, she just jumps, fearlessly, landing on all four feet sometimes and "sticking" the landing. Other times, she comes crashing down and falls over, but picks herself up, and determined not to be discouraged, trots off in her crooked little way or runs off in her distinct hopping gait--and each time, I am amazed and my heart bursts with pride at my sweet brave angel, who has no idea she has any disability at all. And I guess, she really doesn't!!

Recently,I even got a book dedicated to her called "One at a Time -- A Week in an American Animal Shelter" by Diane Leigh and Marilee Geyer.
