Bonnie's Story

Bonnie-Legs came into my life through a phone call to the rescue group I deal with. A kitten was abandoned in the heart of the city, and it had a broken leg. I went with my husband to the very busy area of the city and found nothing. Hubby was badgering me to go after I had checked all the abandoned cars, and other potential hiding places. I was determined by nature to find this baby, and looked in the last possible place. In a tiny squeeze spot in an alley between two buildings, I found the traumatized tortoishell kitten! Luck was with me in the fact that the only way out was through where my trap was! The other route was certain death, as a very busy city street was there. My first impression of her was some really sadistic person broke her tiny leg! I kept her in my bathroom for her quarantine time, and was shocked to see her hind leg flipped backward over her side, with her foot touching her spine. I took many pictures the first night and cried with every picture I shot! The next day at the vets calmed my anger a tiny bit. I was still really ripped that anyone would abandon a kitten in such condition! It turned out she did not have a broken leg, but a birth defect. She was spayed and vaccinated….and went out for adoptions. Bonnie went out at least five times, and despite her being a gorgeous little tortie, no one wanted her because of her hind leg! One time a person came in, and burst into tears, and wrote a check out to the shelter in Bonnie's name! But she didn't want to adopt her! During that time at least 15 cats and kittens got adopted out but no one picked Bonnie-Legs! I kept her from that last day! And she has been a doll! Today she is about 3 years old, and gets along well with the whole house! I do however worry about her future mobility. She seems very uncomfortable some days, as her entire spine feels her hindleg deformity! I watch her daily, and so far she is feeling fine! And another odd thing I found about her is she is double pawed on all the legs except the deformed one. Jan
