Zero's Story

Hello, my name is Montana, and I have a very special kitty named Zero who was diagnosed with CH when he was a couple months old.

A normal day in the life of Zero begins as follows: Upon waking, Zero takes a wobbly stretch on his 'prince pillow' placed at the foot of my bed, and gingerly steps onto the padded bench underneath him, and literally flies off of it, landing a couple feet away from his designated location. But this doesn't deter him. He then proudly prances, high-stepping it into the kitchen, where he loudly vocalizes the fact that it is breakfast time. He follows me and the scent of wet food to his specially located dish and water bowl, conveniently raised up a little higher so he doesn't have to struggle so much to eat. How could anyone resist this lovely, quirky, but somewhat challenged kitty?

My mom and I first spotted Zero as we walked through our local mall one Saturday at a weekly adoption gathering. There he was. Alone, and in a big cage far in the back, we noticed a gorgeous blue-eyed flame-point Siamese-mix kitten sitting awkwardly crouching in a litterbox. It was love at first sight, and we thought he would make a great addition to our multi-cat household. Our first impression of our new kitten was quite a worried one, We got him home and placed him on a pillow, where he remained for about 12 hours without moving much. When he finally accepted the food and water we offered, we noticed a 'pecking' movement as his mouth struggled to grasp the bits of food. I went to bed that night extremely confused and worried, while my mom went online, searching for the cause of his symptoms. And she found it. Cerebellar Hypoplasia. We knew we had a challenge facing us, but were ready to face it head on, as we had fallen completely in love with him.

Luckily, Zero is completely able to walk on his own and even climb, though he is quite wobbly and takes his tumbles now and then. Shaking his head can cause him to become off-balance, and his neck will often get 'stuck' in a position when looking at objects, but he has gotten better at righting himself quite well. Loud noises can startle him easily, and he has little panic attacks where he'll gallop into a wall unexpectedly. He's even chipped one of his fangs almost half off from these little spells.

Zero also has a quite unusual trait, and I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this in their CH kitties. Zero can air walk! Yes, it sounds strange, but when he jumps up on a surface, he emits a little 'mew' of determination, and double jumps while in mid air, causing him to literally fly across the room! It's the funniest and most endearing thing I've ever seen.

Zero's 'love factor' is also extremely high. I have never had a cat who is so loveable with headbutts and kisses, and meows just to be picked up or get a belly rub. Wherever I am in the house, it only takes a series of little noises to get him to come galloping towards me.

After adopting Zero I realized that I will always want a CH kitty to love. Since I'm new to this website, feel free to email me with any advice you may have!
